How the Name Mixer works

A name mixer joins pieces of names into one. The hard part is not the joining. The hard part is choosing which pieces to keep. Our Name Mixer creates hundreds of possible blends, throws out the awkward ones, and ranks the rest so the best options show up first.

The seven methods

  • Overlap blend: uses letters that the two names already share at the join, like Liam and Amy becoming Liamy.
  • Half split: takes the first half of one name and the second half of the other.
  • Syllable swap: keeps whole syllables, which usually gives the smoothest result.
  • Letter weave: alternates small groups of letters from each name. It is the wildest method and is ranked lower.
  • Shared-letter anchor: joins the names at a letter that appears in both.
  • Short-form combo: joins the first two to four letters of each name.
  • Sound twist: adds a soft ending such as a, o or ie to a blend that would otherwise end on a hard consonant.

You can read how each method works, with examples, in our guide on how to mix two names.

How blends are ranked

The flow score looks at length, the mix of vowels and consonants, long runs of the same type, how smooth the join is, and whether both names are clearly present. A blend that uses only one letter from a name loses points. A blend with three consonants in a row loses points too. The score is a quick guide, not a verdict. Always say the name out loud.

Tips for better results

Try both orders. One order nearly always sounds better than the other. Use the Short style if you want a name for a username. Use Long if you want to keep more of each name. If a blend feels close but not perfect, copy it and change one letter by hand. Most great blends are polished by a person.

Before you use a blended name for anything public, run it through the name availability checklist.

FAQ

Name Mixer: common questions

How do I mix two names together?

Type both names into the Name Mixer and press Mix names. The tool cuts and joins the names in seven different ways and shows the best blends first.

Can I mix three names?

Yes. Tick Add a third name and enter it. The tool first blends two names, then joins the best results with the third name.

What does the flow score mean?

It is a quick estimate of how easy a blend is to say. Higher scores usually have a smoother mix of vowels and consonants and a good length. It is a guide, not a rule.

Why do I only see a few results for very short names?

When names have two or three letters, there are only a few ways to cut and join them. The tool will still show every reasonable option.

Does the tool work with names that have accents?

Yes. Accented letters are kept in the result. Spaces, numbers and symbols are removed before blending.

Are my names saved or shared?

No. The tool runs in your browser and does not send the names you type to our server. Favorites are stored only on your device.
